The Longest Day PREMIERES!

Back in mid November i volunteered to help Ron Dawson with the production of “The Longest Day”. It involved some of the top wedding photographers in the industry. Here is the explanation by Ron and Episode One video below with a few cameos by yours truly. Enjoy!

It’s been a long time in the making, but it’s finally here. The premiere episode of the first online reality TV show for and about professional photographers, “The Longest Day,” this year’s buzz-building videos series for WPPI 2009.

The premise is simple: get 24 of the hottest professional photographers in the country (and Canada), bring them all to southern California armed only with the knowledge that they would be split into two teams and given an assignment to complete in just 24 hours. Once they arrive, they find out their assignment is to write, shoot, and edit an original short film about photography, AND an original PSA about the respective charity for which they are playing: ThirstRelief and Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

Over a series of ten episodes, you’ll see the drama; the comedy; and the battle for the best video and PSA as voted on by YOU. That’s right, as we lead up to WPPI (February 14-19) we’ll air the episodes. Then, about a week before, we’ll show the final short films and PSAs by both teams. You will then have an opportunity to vote for the videos you like the best. Thanks to our sponsors, the winning team will win $3,000 for their charity. The other charity will earn $2,000. (In this episode you’ll hear me mention $1,000 and $500 as the respective prizes. The ante got upped since the taping of this show).

HOG FOR KIDS: Day 9-Ft. Collins Lifestyle Portrait Session with Bell Family

Last night i arrived at my friend Michelle’s home after my longest ride yet. We both attended the University of Kansas and shared many good times together. I had not seen her since we left college and looked forward to catching up. I was quickly introduced to her two beautiful children Olivia (Livy) and Connor before putting them to bed and saw that they would be a blast to work with when i pulled my camera out. Michelle excused herself as she started the night shift as a tele-nurse and Marty and i enjoyed some burgers they had just grilled.

This morning i hung out wit the kids and helped Michelle as she got the day ready for us to go out to the park and play. I love being there early to capture the family as the day unfolds. How Connor just chows down on his breakfast and makes sure to feed Bella (the dog) who happily awaiting for the scraps. And how little Miss Libby shyly wonders who this strange man in her home is doing with that big camera.

Sandy Puc’s Bellies & Babies Workshop

Last night i attended Sandy Puc’s Bellies & Babies Workshop in Foster City, CA. I was joined by my friend Tamee Renae and come to find out a ton of my fellow members from NCPP. I was looking forward to seeing Sandy in action since i had seen her in some of my Photovision Educational DVD’s in the past and was attracted to her work. I wanted to learn more about shooting babies and how she markets that business since many of my friends are now having babies and calling me up for images.

Sam (a nickname her Dad gave her that stuck) runs a very successful studio in Littleton, CO named Expression Photography. She also started the non-profit Now i Lay Me Down to Sleep a few years ago which has about 4,000 photographer from around the US participating in it. NILMDTS provides bereavement photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby and to help them in their healing journey. I put in my application a couple weeks ago once my website was up and running and still waiting to hear from them.

Sam spoke for over 4 hours and shared with us an amazing amount of information and more specifically how to build a profitable Baby Plan, Posing Techniques, Marketing, Community Exposure, and much more. First thing i realized was that studio lighting was not that complex. Sam uses mainly two sets of lights from Larson Enterprises which she demonstrated how to use on stage. I came out of the talk wanting to buy some studio lights, getting rid of all the furniture in my living room and doing what she does everyday in my home. She actually started the same way and was telling us how she had to back up all the way into one of her bathrooms and i think standing in the bathtub to get enough space to shoot with a long lens. Once i get my wedding business going consistently i think i might just invest in some lighting and start playing with what i learned. Thanks Sam for an excellent workshop.

My First Trip to WPPI

I am off to WPPI in Las Vegas tomorrow. WPPI hosts the largest wedding and portrait photographer convention and trade-show in the world. I am looking forward to the great lineup of speakers and getting to meet some of the top photographers in the industry.

Lunch with Lori Paladino at Google

I met Lori Paladino of Lori Paladino Photography in August of last year when i attended the Modern Bridal Show at the San Francisco Ritz Carlton in my quest to research bridal shows and meet other photographers. We had fun chatting and talking about the wedding industry. Shortly after we met she had the wedding of Emily and Daniel in August that her Second Shooter was unable to work so she dropped me a line and i was happy to help and learn and excited about the opportunity. We had a great day and i was stoked that she loved my work and would let me know about weddings the following year. Recently she sent me 8 wedding dates for me to Second Shoot with her this year, i was super excited and extremely grateful. Thank you Lori, can’t wait til our first wedding this year.

Lori also works part-time as a recruiter at Google. When i found out i said i would love to have lunch there and experience what i had recently read about in the book The Google Story. It is a truly remarkable place. Seems more like a college campus with so many young people walking around and the only people in suits were the ones on the visitors tours. We dinned at the main cafeteria (which is free to all) and Lori mentioned that there are tons of other places to eat with just about any type of cuisine imaginable. There are just way too many benefits to mention so i looked them up, see the Google employee benefits here. Ok, so if i were to go back to Corporate America i would definitely work here. For example, 15 days vacation your first year when i had to work 3 years to there at my old job. With on-site benfeits like this who would ever want to leave the Googleplex: there’s on-site oil change, car wash, dry cleaning, massage therapy, gym, hair stylist, fitness classes and bike repair. Thanks for having me over Lori, looking forward to coming back and trying some of the other eateries.

Kate Chase Presents, Lou Lesko, & BART

I took BART into San Francisco earlier this evening to attend a Apple Store photography presentation. The presentation this evening was sponsored by the Advertising Photographers of America. The title was Kate Chase-The Business of Photography. Kate is an agent that represents digital artists/retouchers. Mainly people that work on large commercial jobs editing the files the photographers deliver to the client to create the idea developed for the advertisement. She spoke about the large need for full time retouchers and how there are no programs out today with a curriculum to produce the talent needed. The need is in that photographers want to go out and take photographs and not be stuck behind the computer editing their work. Some of the examples she shared with us are pretty elaborate(contain several images) pieces which take a significant amount of talent and time to create. This is also a business model that is starting to grow in the wedding industry where companies (Shootdotedit, Lavalu, etc.) are taking the captured files after a wedding and editing down the selects and then applying the any digital retouching to the images. Therefore, giving the photographer back the time to go out and do what he does best and not be stuck in the studio editing thousands of images after a wedding.

I also had the opportunity to meet up with my friend, photographer Lou Lesko who wrote the book Advertising Photography-A Straightforward Guide to a Complex Industry. He was kind enough give me and autograph one of his books for me that i will be taking to WPPI this week as a gift to Gene Higa, a local San Francisco Destination Wedding Photographer who is doing the work i aspire to be doing. Thanks Lou.

On the way back home i got off on the wrong BART station, there are two BART stations in Walnut Creek and the second one is called Pleasant Hill Station but is still on the Walnut Creek side. So when the Walnut Creek station was announced i jumped out to soon realize that it was the next one. Figured i would walk the mile or two and get some exercise and fresh air instead of waiting another 15 minutes for the next train. Here is a fun shot i took with my point and shoot as i walked across the overpass. Put it in Manual and played with some time lapse photography. Enjoy.

Shockwave Dancers Swimsuit Calendar Shoot with Sam Harnack Studios

Yesterday i joined my friend Sam Harnack to give him a helping hand with his calendar shoot. He was assigned to photograph a swimsuit calendar for the Stockton Lightning Arena football team dancers. I drove over to Lodi and met the group at his studio where i met the dancers and their coach, ex SF 49ers cheerleader Melissa Galvin. We drove north to Lincoln to our location. Our location was a very nice home in a gated community. They had a very large backyard that had a pool with waterfalls and wonderful landscaping. Sam plugged in via wireless to his iMac and when he started and did not stop til we wrapped later that afternoon. I spent that day managing the memory cards, helping set custom white balance and exposures with the Ed Pierce Digital Calibration Targets, using reflectors or scrims to bring in or block the bright sun, and lastly trying to not stare at all the beautiful girls running around in bikinis. We wrapped up the day with dinner at a local Mexican Restaurant in Sacramento. Thanks Sam for the invitation, it was great working with you and seeing the behind the scenes of a photographer i look up to.

Dinner with Kenny Kim

Had dinner last night with my friend Kenny Kim at The Cheesecake Factory. We met about a month ago while he was helping with DJ’s Freedom & Slumber workshop. He has had a pretty crazy schedule for the last couple of months also helping out Mike Colon at his local workshop in Orange County and then traveling with Mike and Bob Davis for their Master their Craft Tour. We caught up over dinner and i had a chance to have a real conversation outside of the craziness of a workshop. We spoke about the industry, networking, and how we both go started and where we came from. Kenny recently asked me to shoot a wedding with him in San Francisco and i feel honored and stoked about the opportunity. Thanks Kenny for dinner last night, for all your insights, and for sharing your knowledge with me. Looking forward to hanging out at WPPI in a couple of weeks.

Adobe Lightroom Class with Tamee Renae

Tonight i attended a Lightroom class that was sponsored and put on by our local PPA group NCPP. The class was led by photographer Tamee Renae whom i met last year at Bambi and Jerry’s Workshop since she works for Bambi. Lightroom is a program made by Adobe that helps photographers manage their files. Tamee did a wonderful job getting us all acquainted with Lightroom and giving us an idea of what a good workflow might look like. Thank you Tamee for helping us out and getting me started with what i think is now the market leading software in file management.

Michelle Walker Travel Photography Show

Last night I went to a photography show with my friend and fellow Bay Area wedding photographer Sylvain Gentile. We attended Michelle Walker’s Travel Photography show. Jose Villa introduced me to Michelle last year at the PDN on the Road seminar. She is a very talented Bay Area wedding photographer that has been published in many of the major magazines. Definitely someone i look up to. She took photographs from her travels to Cuba, India, Africa, and Peru and had some amazing large (40 by 60) canvases made by Simply Canvas. The show will be on display at Luka’s Taproom & Lounge til March 29th. You can see the images on her new website under Galleries then Travel. We enjoyed some great food, some Oscar watching on the projector, and lastly some great company. Congrats Michelle on the success of your first show.

Ed Pierce Captivated by the Light Workshop-San Francisco

Tonight i attended the photography seminar “Captivated by the Light” by Ed Pierce. Ed has been in the business for over 30 years and is an excellent teacher. I have followed him via his Photovision DVD’s that come out every two months. A testament to how well respected he is the DVD’s are now offered free (you only pay the shipping and handling for the year-$35) due to the generosity of his sponsors like Canon and WHCC. A lot of what was discussed involved in studio lighting and shooting which is not necessarily where i am right now in my business but it was wonderful to see and hear (via video) from some of the top studios in the nation. The last video he presented was of Sandy Puc discussing how NILMDTS got started. NILMDTS is a wonderful organization of photograsphers nationwide that provides free photography services for bereavement photography. This reminded me to make sure i get my website up next week so i can put in my application to them to become a local photographer.

Wedding Cake Shoot for Cakework in San Francisco

Cecile from Cakework came by the studio today and dropped of a beautiful cake for us to photograph for a submission to Grace Ormonde Magazine. Mark, the photographer i manage the studio for does mainly commercial photography and he was doing this as a favor. He did not understand my excitement about the cake possibly being featured in what i think is the Cadillac of all wedding magazines. I was was excited for him. Anyways, he had to take off to run some errands so i set up the shoot and had some fun taking a few images with our new Canon Mark III 1Ds. The images below are from my point and shoot, not the 1Ds.

Coffee with Livermore Wedding Photographer Sylvain Gentile

This afternoon i had the opportunity to meet Sylvain Gentile for coffee at Starbucks in Dublin. Sylvain and i are both member of David Jay’s Freedom Club and started corresponding back and forth via Facebook once i found out he was local. He comes from a sport photography background (his father owns a very successful sports photography business) and is just getting into wedding photography also. We are both in a similar place where we are trying to absorb as much as possible and learn from each other. It’s funny when you meet someone that is in the same place as you there is definitely no silence in the conversation. Ideas, thought, gossip, are exchanged freely and it is often a great relief meeting someone that just understands. It was great meeting you Sylvain, look forward to hanging out.

Today I had the opportunity of meeting with Sacramento photographer Ruben Gonzalez. Ruben and i met at the last PPSV (Professional Phootgraphers of Sacramento Vallley) meeting that featured Mike Larson. We had lunch at PF Chang’s in Walnut Creek and discussed many topics ranging from marketing to the lack of Hispanic photographers in the area. We spoke on different approaches we could take in our business given our Hispanic background and fluency of Spanish. Thanks for driving down Ruben, look forward to continuing our discussions on the Hispanic market.

Today i drove over to Lodi to meet up with my friend Sam Harnack. We met at the Bambi Cantrell and Jerry Ghionis Workshop in Pleasant Hill last year. Sam has a very successful studio in Lodi where a large part of his clientele is high school seniors. He does and amazing job, check out his website. We grabbed lunch at a local mexican restaurant and caught up on all the wedding business and then hung out at his studio. Over lunch he mentioned to me that he was doing a boudoir session and if the client did not mind i could stay and watch. He created another site just for this type of photography and he said he has not advertised other than some Google Ad Words it and has gotten a good amount of clients just from searches online. Check out his boudoir site called Pajama Glamour. By the way, he has an amazing staff, Miss Libby and the talented Mr Chris are a last and definitely fun to hang with. So the client had no problem with me hanging out and i was able to see Sam work his magic, a very talented man indeed. Thanks Sam for letting me hang out and pick you brain.

Digital Photography Edge-Bruce Dorn & Maura Dutra Seminar

Tonight i attended the Digital Photography Edge Workshop by Canon Explorer of Light Bruce Dorn and his partner Corel Paint Master Maura Dutra. Learned advanced speedlite techniques, cinematic composition for capture, artistic application of textures, introduction to digital painting, elegant and efficient Album design. Unfortunately they were pressed for time and they had quite a vast knowledge on each technique but were not able to go in depth on each or spend more time on them. I mainly learned more about how to use my flash creatively by taking it off camera and placing in in other areas of a reception during weddings. I purchased their Baby Slipper so i can hang my flash on the wall or even place it on top of one of the DJ’s speakers. Will be giving it a try at my next wedding in Chicago.

David Jay’s Freedom & Slumber Workshop in Santa Barbara

I had an amazing time this weekend attending David Jay’s Freedom & Slumber workshop in Santa Barbara. It all started with a party on friday night where i met DJ’s friends. Many were local talented photographers: Rodolfo Arpia, Brittany Leigh Gebler, and Michael & Anna Costa. I even got to meet DJ’s best friend Deyl Kearinand chat with him about their trip to a private island in Nicaragua the amazing book written by the family that owns the home (A Family on the Move).

Friday evening we all found a corner to crash(slumber party remember) and filled up our air beds and settled in for the night. We awoke to a a nice breakfast set up that Crystal (DJ’s assistant extraordinaire) put together for us. We then submerged ourselves with 8 hours of intense training befeore heading oof to downton Santa Barbara for Sushi and then an evening engagement session with some models. The weather did not agree with us as it continued to pur so we headed back to the Freedom House. The next day we continued talking through some new techniques for a “Hands-Free” workflow and we also talked about how to “Get-FIT” and create more FLEXIBILTY, INCOME, & TIME in our lives and then how to use those things to create more meaning in others lives. I was sad to leave Santa Barbara and all my new friends. Mike Larson also stopped by and spoke to us about being first or being forgotten and about the power of the slideshow. He even did his famous camera toss in the house for us.

Plantronics Photoshoot with Mark Leet Photography

I made it to the shoot by 9AM, just a little late since it was a 6AM call time. When i assist for Mark i usually manage the computer. We shoot tethered with the Canon Mark III 1Ds straight into a fully loaded MacPro with one screen for me and Mark and another for the Client. Today we were shooting some of the new headsets that Plantronics will be releasing soon down by the Embarcadero. It was raining and pretty cold, quite a shock to the system when just a few hours ago i was lounging on the beach in Maui.

Had some fun at the studio today being the stand in as we tested the lighting for an upcoming shoot. We finally got another Canon Mark III 1Ds and she is working like a charm. The last one we had died on us on the last shoot. The peace sign was not my choice but part of what a client is looking to have some models portray, should be an interesting concept once we get all the details. All top secret now.

Business License-It’s Official!

Today i got my City of Pleasant Hill Business License. I put in my application before the holidays and here it is. It’s official, i now own my own business! Pretty exciting!

Logitech Shoot

Today we worked on a commercial shoot for Logitech. I packed all the gear with Scott who assists the studio on most of our location jobs. We had the opportunity to shoot at a beautiful home in Portola Valley.

I am usually in charge of managing the files coming into the computer(we shoot tethered most of the time) and handling the camera equipment & lenses and i was excited about today because Mark was lucky to get a Canon Mark III 1Ds on Saturday. He has been on a waiting list since March and this camera was one of the few that are actually in the market. It has a full frame sensor and shoots an amazing 21.1 megapixel file size! We used it most of the morning and got some amazing images and then it took a turn in our excitement died on us, we are not sure what happened but it was fried. It would not turn on or give us any sign of life. Mark spent some time on the phone with the dealer and then with Canon with no luck.

1st Day on the Job

Today i started working as the Studio Manager for Mark Leet Photography. I have my good friend Nicole DeMeo to thank for introducing us last year. Mark has over 20 years experience as a commercial photographer. The studio is based in San Francisco at 2132 Folsom Street which also doubles as a loft space where him and his wife Leslie and beautiful 15 month old daughter Isabella (Bella) live during the week and commute to their home in Woodside, CA on the weekends. I am helping Mark with studio management, producing shoots, and marketing and new business development.

Photography New Year’s Resolutions

Just wanted to share some of my Photography New Year’s Resolutions.

Comment on Blogs vs. just stalking them (i only follow about 80 or so! gotta love Google Reader)
Participate in the Forums (Freedom Club, Pictage, OSP) i belong to and again stop just stalking and share my knowledge.
Blog a minimum of 4 times a week.
Schedule a shoot every week when have no commissions (practice, practice, practice…)
Start a monthly newsletter.
